Networking

Previous knowledge

My previous knowledge of networking was zero. I have never done any work with networks and had no previous exposure to this subject

Areas of strength

Areas of weakness

Current Knowledge

I understand the basic concepts of networking and the properties that make up a network.

I feel like I could clearly explain the concepts of Bus, Star and Ring network topology.

I am aware of other network topology such as mesh and tree.

I can explain the advantages and disadvantages of each type of network.

I am aware of terms such as 'nodes' and 'links'.

I have a good idea about servers and how they operate within a network.

I feel that I could now teach networking at a low to intermediate level

Strategies For teaching

Clear explinations of the terminology used in computer network topology.

Explain what networks are and what they do.

Lay out a floor plan of bus, star and ring networks. Use the students as information carriers. Tell them they are not allowed to pass each other on a single link. See how easily they can travel between the devices linked to the network.

Disscuss the advantages and disadvantages of different networks.

Complete worksheets on the advantages and disadvantages of each type of network.

Practical Session. Link several computers together. Link several computers to a server. Send information to different computers and to the server. Retrieve information.
